Why keep it a secret?

I'm not really 100% sure as to why people want to keep Psionics a secret. I do have one small answer to my own question but I want to see other reasons. But, I have had first hand experience from telling someone about Psionics and they think I'm crazy and no longer want to be friends. Maybe it's because people are afraid of it, or they don't understand it.

Anyway, it would be very helpful to me if you could respond.

Some people just like the "edge" psions have over average humans, while others are afraid of being deemed a "freak." For me, it's like a basic survival skill. Get a feel for how open-minded someone is, then only tell them as much as you have to, and nothing more, while getting as much info from them as possible. Once I have something more substantial to show them, I may tell them, or I may keep it to myself until later, when I feel they could handle the information better. My reasoning isn't to keep any edge over people, but just to maintain a peaceful life until the right time comes (and avoid being forced into getting an exorcism Rolling Eyes

). It's basically the same reason no one knows I'm a vampire, except for one person who I think really only suspects it. Gods, I hate living in the Bible Belt...

well some do Like the edge and most of us can't do anything that is prove able to the naked eye. I've yet to see someone with control over any type of physical effect.

The 'edge' that psi's have over nons is vastly overstated. I'm finding that very few energy-workers apply that edge in daily life, and instead end up being affected by nons all the time.

As to verification by vision, I have been thinking that some medical scanners might prove useful for that. Things that measure body heat, heartbeat, etc. But then again, these things have been proved with such devices many many times, and humanity still adamantly disbelieves.

Something is fishy.

Humans are just too comfortable with what they think they know to open their minds. It's in human nature to prod and prod at whatever is there.

I was having this discussion with Arcane yesterday...

Humans can not accept what is around them, it is an obsession to rationalize everything that occurs around them.

It is both a flaw, and an advantage.

Now... take the ordinary human and expose them to psi. Suppose you did prove something visually. The first reaction would be to rationalize it.

If the human had NOTHING to rationalize it on... they would fall off track of their "Pre-developed" mental state... aka expectency, vs, reality... what they believe is possible, and what is now seen as being real... it would create inner conflicts in the human both mentally and emotionally...

Thus ruining certain aspects.

Now as for me personally.

I don't tell people about my psi stuff because I don't need to.

Though, I have been very blunt with my family about my "beliefs", but I don't portray anything "out of the ordinary" most times when I am in practice it just looks like I am laying or sitting in a peaceful state.

I don't tell people about my stuff for another reason.
It is because right now there is no "law" or "detection" against what can and can not be done and if the government knew that more people with practical abilities were out there, then they would most certainly want to put a stop to it or examine it.

I don't like to tell people about my stuff because I feel stronger with it.
There are things I can't get away with physically... but when it comes to subtle energy I'm free to do whatever I please. I will admit I don't have alot of moral about how I use my abilities, however I avoid hurting others with my skills at all costs. I rarely attack people. For the most part it's a matter of influence, and gaining personal info about people so I can easily understand them. And in other aspects, it happens so naturally I don't really "try".

I have a hard time reminding myself that normal humans aren't empathic and they aren't aware I can feel and empathize what they feel on a direct strain. As a result I often get confused when people react oddly to words spoken, or other such things.

I often completely ignore body language, and other "communication" techniques, and I use empathy... but it's frustrating when I am talking with people, and I realize they aren't as sensitive as me.

most humans these days are like sheep.
they first will say proof it for me(most of them), and not follow their heart, first they must learn to combine the power of heart and spirit, then we can show them and then they are open for it.
there are some humans i know who believe in it and know their place(the place is that we all are equal, and that i am nothing different also another living being).
but if you have one who thinks that you are a freak and he/she has a big mouth the rest will follow with them.
like sheep jumping over a dam, one go the rest follows.
you can do this also in a good way but thats more difficult.

I concur. I use empathy to decide who I can tell about that special part of me but.... Even though they don't freak out, they don't fully believe it. My girlfriend can't get away with anything with me around. She tried to hide something from me and I said "You know I have this feeling and it's going against me trying to believe you. If something's up I -will- find out." All she said is "I know" which really shows that she didn't fully believe me and she though she could get past me.. Needless to say I found out.
So really my only point in telling people is so I can have open discussions with my other metaphysical friend in front of them without them going "wtf"... much.

I want to say here that the reason I believe people refuse to believe in psionics is because as Tosharu said they cant rationalize it. If you look at it psionics is a far jump in technology and knowledge. We found something that we weren't supposed to find in this time. We skipped a generation or a few in technology and knowledge and we dont have the knowledge and technology from between those generations to prove and rationalize this new found ability. We cant prove this ability by technological means until we fill in the gap in technology. The only way we can prove it is by personal experience which means you have to have someone see you do it and satisfy their skepticism completely.

Another reason, which might or might not give you something to think about.
The average christian thinks that any paranormal abilities not bestowed by god are black magic, and that you are consorting with the devil. This essentially makes you as bad as the devil in many of their eyes. Except, this is a mortal devil, one you can stop before he hurts the innocent and... yeah.
Given that we already have radical islamists that kill us because of our nationality, its no stretch to see our kind being hunted down.
